Zhejiang University is a national comprehensive university. Founded in 1897, it was initially known as “Qiushi Shuyuan” (Qiushi Academy), one of the earliest modern academies of higher learning established in China.
Zhejiang University‘s fields of study cover philosophy, literature, history, education, science, economics, law, management, engineering, agriculture, medicine and etc. The university, now has 113 specialties for undergraduate studies, and it is entitled to confer master’s degrees in 324 programs and primary (secondary) discipline doctoral degrees in 41 (252) programs.

At present, the total number of full time students has reached over 42,117 including more than 22,260 undergraduates, over 12,819 postgraduates working for master’s degrees and over 7,038 Ph.D candidates. There are also nearly 37,000 students taking courses in degree and non-degree programs in adult education. Among its 8,299 staff members and workers, there are 15 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 12 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 1,292 full professors and over 2,455 associate professors.

According to the statistics of Dec. 2016, the university has 15,092 master’s degree students, 9,537 doctoral candidates, studying in its 334 master’s degree programs and 274 doctoral degree programs.
International Students
Each year the university enrolls international students to pursue degrees or take short-term courses. In 2016, around 6,237 international students from over 130 countries were in registrations for various programs offered by the university.
Continuing Education
The university offers valuable opportunities for life long learning. Continuing education schedules a broad range of courses, seminars for people in the campus. The distance-learning education provides degree and non-degree courses.
With a total space of 86,000 square meters, the university libraries has a collection of more than 6,935,000 volumes. In addition, the library has introduced over 400 electronic databases in all disciplines, including over 1,700,000 e-books, over 79,480 full-text journals in different languages

Zhejiang University has seven campuses:
Yuquan Campus (Chinese: 玉泉校区)[edit]
The main campus of engineering. It was the main campus of Zhejiang University until Zijin’gang Campus was built in 2002.
Xixi Campus (Chinese: 西溪校区)[edit]
The campus of arts and sciences. It was previously Hangzhou University before its merge into Zhejiang University in 1998.
Haining International Campus (Chinese: 海宁国际校区)[edit]
Located in the city of Haining.[17] This campus is opened in 2016 and become an integrative part of Zhejiang University, with clusters of international cooperative partners and institutions residing here.
Huajiachi Campus (Chinese: 华家池校区)[edit]
The campus of agriculture. It was previously Zhejiang Agricultural University before it’s merged into Zhejiang University, and also where the old Huajiachi Campus of “National Che Kiang University” located. This campus has been the oldest one of Zhejiang University.
A part of it has already been sold, and the College of Agriculture and Biotechnology and the College of Animal Sciences have moved to Zijin’gang Campus.
Zhijiang Campus (Chinese: 之江校区)[edit]
The old campus of mathematics and related theoretical sciences, at present the main part of which is Guanghua Law School. It was the campus of Zhijiang University before 1952.

Zijin’gang Campus (Chinese: 紫金港校区)[edit]
New and the biggest campus, the headquarters, campus of medical school, located in the northwest of Hangzhou. Most of the first year and second year undergraduate students live in this campus.

Zhoushan Campus (Chinese: 舟山校区)[edit]
New campus opens in 2015, the headquarters, campus of Ocean College, located in the Zhoushan, 200 km far away from Hangzhou.

Zhejiang University is equipped with advanced facilities of various kinds for teaching and research, including libraries, labs, computer and information centers, analysis and test centers, and modern educational technology centers. The university has 7 hospitals affiliated to it, including three general hospitals, one gynecology and obstetrics hospital, one pediatric hospital and one stomatology hospital. In additional to providing excellent medical service for people all over Zhejiang Province, the hospitals also serve as teaching and research bases of medical science, conducting edge-cutting research projects such as early diagnosis and immunotherapy of cancer, emergency medicine, neurosurgery and cataract surgery.

Journal of Zhejiang University SCIENCE (A & B)
The Journal of Zhejiang University (Science) is an English publication edited by an international board of distinguished Chinese and foreign scientists and is aimed to present the lasted development and achievements in scientific research in China and overseas to the world’s scientific circles, especially to stimulate and promote academic exchange between Chinese scientists and their foreign counterparts.

The university library consists of one main library, which is located at the Yuquan Campus, and four branch libraries which are distributed at various campuses.
